The University of Michigan is once again ranked as one of the top public universities in the United States in the QS World University Rankings 2026 edition released June 19.

U-M ranked 45th overall among 1,501 universities across the globe, and 14th among the 192 institutions in the United States included in the rankings.

MORE INFORMATION

U-M is ranked second among all U.S. public universities and is one of only three public universities in the U.S to be ranked in the top 50. The University of California, Berkeley, was the top-ranked public university.

The rankings are based on nine factors:

  • Academic reputation (30%)
  • Employer reputation (15%)
  • Employability (5%)
  • Faculty-student ratio (10%)
  • Citations per faculty (20%)
  • Proportion of international faculty (5%)
  • Proportion of international students (5%)
  • International research collaboration (5%)
  • Sustainability (5%)

Among those categories, U-M scored highest for academic excellence followed by the employability of its graduates and its comprehensive international research partnerships.

The university’s strong performance in academic reputation, employer reputation, and employment outcomes aligns with recent data proving the value of a U-M degree. Internationally, U-M’s global impact is demonstrated by its consistent recognition as a top producer of Fulbright U.S. Scholars and U.S. Students — prestigious awards that support study, teaching, and research abroad.

At home, U-M serves 18,000 in-state undergraduates representing all 83 Michigan counties, with nearly two-thirds graduating debt-free. More than 116,000 U-M Ann Arbor alumni are contributing to Michigan’s economy, including many employed at Fortune 500 companies and other major organizations across the state.
