U-M again ranked among the world’s best universities
View allThe University of Michigan is once again recognized as a leading global research institution in the QS World University Rankings 2027 edition released June 18.
Placing 51st overall among 1,504 universities worldwide, U-M ranks in the top 3.4% of institutions globally and 15th among the 184 institutions in the United States included in the rankings. This positions U-M as the third highest ranked public university nationwide. The University of California, Berkeley, was the top-ranked public university.

U-M earned its highest marks for academic excellence, followed by graduate employability and its extensive international research partnerships. The university’s strong results in academic reputation, employer reputation and employment outcomes are consistent with data demonstrating the value of a U-M degree.
The rankings are based on a total of nine factors:
- Academic reputation (30%)
- Employer reputation (15%)
- Employability (5%)
- Faculty-student ratio (10%)
- Citations per faculty (20%)
- Proportion of international faculty (5%)
- Proportion of international students (5%)
- International research collaboration (5%)
- Sustainability (5%)
Internationally, U-M’s global impact is demonstrated by its consistent recognition as a top producer of Fulbright U.S. Scholars, the U.S. government’s premier international academic exchange program. U-M has received over 600 U.S. scholar awards and more than 1,000 U.S. student awards since the Fulbright Program’s inception, according to the International Institute Fellowships & Grants Office.
The university’s global impact is reflected in its ability to attract students from around the world, including 2,658 international undergraduate students enrolled in fall 2025. In the state of Michigan, U-M serves nearly 19,000 in-state undergraduates representing all 83 Michigan counties, with more than 60% of local students now graduating entirely debt-free. Michigan residents with family incomes and assets of $125,000 or less may be eligible for support from the Go Blue Guarantee, which covers full undergraduate tuition and mandatory fees.
U-M graduates play an essential role in Michigan’s economic growth. Over 124,000 alumni are actively supporting the state’s economy, with many working at Fortune 500 companies and other leading organizations throughout Michigan.
